Alfa Romeo

Alfa Romeo

Company was established in 1910. It's interesting that name has nothing in common with Greek letter - alpha. Alfa is abbreviation: Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (Corporate Lombardic car Plant). Second part — Romeo — was added when in 1915 engineer and businessman Nicola Romeo headed this company. Romeo invited engineers who aspired to work in sport auto industry. By 1925 engineering department created Alfa Romeo 6С and following 8C model - they were one of the best prewar roadsters. It shall be noted that only 8C was able to compete with German race cars on Grand Prix tracks.

Sport is a dominant idea of all postwar models - including "Juliet" sedan issued in 1954. At once it became the favorite of policeman and criminals. However roadsters and coupe still left the basic models of Alfa Romeo. At last, it caused financial problems - it was too difficult for company to create sport cars and classical sedans intended for wide range of customers.

Looking for happy mean company almost lost its potential and in 1986 was taken under FIAT wing. Then Italians were given a free hand - designers and engineers understood that they are free to experiment. Alfa Romeo engineering department created such models as GTV - one of the best coupes in the world, Alfa Romeo 156 sedan and Alfa Romeo 147 hatchback. These sedans took the European honorary prize "Car of the year" in 1998 and 2000 relatively.
