Range extender being planned for Cadillac ELR and Chevy Volt
There are reports that General Motors is planning, in association with its Chinese partners, to introduce plug-ins that are gas based to cut down on the weight and fuel use of Cadillac ELR and Chevrolet Volt. These engines would replace the present 84bhp engines that are 1.4 liters and being used in Chevrolet Volt. The development of this new engine would mean that GM would be able to keep the weight of its next cars low while at the same time increasing their fuel economy. However, there has been no confirmation as to how much of enhancement would be possible with these changes. The new engine will be used in Volt in 2014 and in ELR only from 2015.
As far as current fuel consumption patterns are concerned, Volt gives 98 miles per gallon in the electric model and 37 miles per gallon in cars running on gas.
