Interesting News
  • VAUXHALL news.

When the Astra range was unveiled, Vauxhall shouted from the rooftops that its most frugal 1.6-litre CDTi ecoFLEX model was capable of emitting just 82g/km of CO2. But a couple of months on and the figures have been revised, and the reality isn’t quite as favourable, with 88g/km the newly quoted figure for hatchback editions. This results in the fuel economy on the combined cycle amounts changing from 91.2mpg to 85.6mpg - a reduction of 5.6mpg. Customers that have ordered vehicles based on the more favourable figures will no doubt be disappointed and perhaps question whether this was a deliberate ploy to hit headlines. And the same issue affects the most powerful 1.6-litre CDTi Biturbo editions with 108g/km previously quoted, whereas in reality the actual figure is now 111g/km. This not only results in a fuel economy figure that is 1.6mpg lower, but it also means an extra Ј10 per year to purchase the vehicle excise duty. Despite the amendments, the prices of all Astra models remain the same as before.
  • FIAT news.

The entry-price for Fiat’s new 500X has come down with the launch of new 94bhp 1.3-litre MultiJet engined versions. Prices now start at Ј16,345 for the Pop 1.3 MultiJet, with the mid-range Pop Star version costing Ј18,095, and the flagship Lounge edition priced at Ј19,845. The new 1.3-litre engine is Ј1,000 cheaper than the 118bhp 1.6-litre version, and introduces the more basic, entry-level Pop specification to the diesel engine range for the first time. But despite the more modest power output, there’s no savings to be made on CO2 emissions, as both engines emit the same figure of 109g/km, and according to official figures, capable of 68.9mpg on the combined cycle. The new 1.3-litre engine is available to order now, with the first deliveries expected in the new year.

The green light has been given to the Porsche Mission E project, following overwhelming response to its debut at the Frankfurt motor show last September. Due to be launched at the end of the decade, the newcomer will be the first 100 per cent electrically powered Porsche in the company’s history. More than 10,000 jobs will be created in Stuttgart, with in excess of half a billion pounds set to be invested, including a new assembly line and paint shop. The current engine factory will be expanded to allow production of electric motors, and the company’s research and development in Weissach will see extra cash ploughed into it. If the production car remains true to the motor show concept car, it will be a four-door, four-seat vehicle, with a maximum power output of more than 590bhp. Acceleration to 62mph will be under 3.5 seconds, and the car will have a driving range of more than 500 miles. It’s intended that the battery pack will be rechargeable back up to 80 per cent of its capacity in just 15 minutes, using a specially developed 800- volt charger unit. Wireless inductive charging will also be an optional extra.
