  • Leoncino.

    Given how popular the scrambler look has become of late, it is of little surprise that Benelli have resurrected the Leoncino name with this scrambler-esque motorbike. This stylised bike even features the lion of Pesaro (Benelli’s home town) on the front mudguard, a throwback to the original bike that bore the same name. Power comes from a totally new liquid-cooled four-valve DOHC 500-cc twin-cylinder engine that has an output rating of 47.6 PS at 8,500 RPM and 45 Nm of maximum twist force at 4,500 RPM. Transmission is, of course, via a six-speed gearbox. The Leoncino’s chassis comprises the trademark Benelli trellis; the front end with 50-mm USD forks while the at the rear there is an offset monoshock with adjustment for spring preload and hydraulic rebound damping. Stopping power comes from a pair of 320-mm dia rotors with radial four-piston callipers and a single 260-mm dia rotor with twin-piston callipers. For those of you who couldn’t go to EICMA, this wonderful looking machine will also grace the Benelli stall at the forthcoming Auto Expo next February according to the company’s top management.

    The much-talked-about collaboration between BMW Motorrad and our very own TVS Motors has resulted in this: the BMW G 310 R. Although there was no mention of TVS at the BMW Motorrad stall at EICMA, this is the bike that will lead the Indo-German onslaught in the suddenly burgeoning 300-cc segment. Styling of this brand-new naked motorcycle, BMW’s first sub-500-cc bike in recent years, is attractive but far from revolutionary. Ergonomics seem to be fairly relaxed but not as upright as a typical commuter. So far so conservative. What is truly revolutionary, however, is the engine placement - unlike all other manufacturers BMW have gone with a design that places the exhaust outlet facing backwards. Although the advantages of this move are unclear, it would aid ram air intake if there was one. Speaking of the engine, it’s an all-new 313-cc water-cooled single-cylinder with four valves and DOHC. Peak power is rated at 34 PS, which is available at 9,500 revs, while max torque of 28 Nm comes in at 7,500 RPM. Can’t wait to ride it!

    If you thought the RC 390 was a great bike to own and ride, well, guess what, it becomes even better now. KTM have ditched that underbelly exhaust for a more conventionally mounted end can on the right and have added ride-by-wire technology to help refine the delivery of the 44 PS from the bike’s liquid-cooled 373-cc single-cylinder engine. A slipper clutch has also been thrown in to reduce wheel chatter during trail braking or aggressive downshifting. All of these additions also mean that for the first time the KTM RC 390 is now Euro 4 compliant. Expect these changes to come into the 390 Duke as well.
