  • Aprilia RSV4 R-FW.

For those who think good just isn’t good enough, Aprilia has released more information on a “Factory Works” program that will enable riders or teams to buy an RSV4 built by the manufacturer’s racing department. While the program is primarily intended to keep Aprilia’s RSV4 on race grids around the world, it is also a chance for (very) serious trackday enthusiasts or collectors to stake their claim on Aprilia Racing Division’s years of hard work and development…for a price, of course. No word just yet on what that price will be, though Aprilia did confirm that the RSV4 R-FW will be made available in five packages (each varying in terms of specification for engine and electronics), with the top packages featuring special electronics systems and an engine with upward of 230 hp. • G 310 R.

The much-talked-about collaboration between BMW Motorrad and our very own TVS Motors has resulted in this: the BMW G 310 R. Although there was no mention of TVS at the BMW Motorrad stall at EICMA, this is the bike that will lead the Indo-German onslaught in the suddenly burgeoning 300-cc segment. Styling of this brand-new naked motorcycle, BMW’s first sub-500-cc bike in recent years, is attractive but far from revolutionary. Ergonomics seem to be fairly relaxed but not as upright as a typical commuter. So far so conservative. What is truly revolutionary, however, is the engine placement - unlike all other manufacturers BMW have gone with a design that places the exhaust outlet facing backwards. Although the advantages of this move are unclear, it would aid ram air intake if there was one. Speaking of the engine, it’s an all-new 313-cc water-cooled single-cylinder with four valves and DOHC. Peak power is rated at 34 PS, which is available at 9,500 revs, while max torque of 28 Nm comes in at 7,500 RPM. Can’t wait to ride it!
  • Exemplary Explorers.

Triumph have updated their largest adventure bike, and like the Tiger 800 there are now two types: the cast-wheel tarmac-biased Explorer XR, and the spoke-wheel trail-ready Explorer XC. The basic version of each bike is pretty much as before. So that’s a luxurious and syrupy 1215cc ride-by-wire inline three, bolted into a substantial chassis with single-sided swimgarm and shaft drive. Suspension is now supplied by WP, however, and the front brakes are one-piece radial Brembos. There are two riding modes, road and rain, each with their own throttle maps and specific settings for the standard-fit traction control and ABS. The classy dash is also new, switchgear is refined, and the screen now moves at the touch of a button. Yes, it’s electric. That’s a class first, you know. As with the smaller Tigers there are flashier variants too. The Explorer XRx and XCx feature an additional off-road mode with its own settings. Better than that, they also have leanangle sensitive traction control and cornering ABS. That’s right - you can go full gas or grab the lever mid-corner, and a little black box squares the job up. The XRx and XCx also benefit from WP’s semi-active suspension, with preset ride options, continually-tweaked damping and rear preload that sets itself automatically. Heated grips, too. There’s more. Go for the touring-biased XRT or round-the-globe XCA, and the revised Explorer also gets a sportmode, a rider configurablemode, hill start control, heated seats and a taller screen. In terms of high-tech-spec, this puts the big Brit right up there with the KTM 1290 Super Adventure and a BMW R1200GSwithall the factory-fit options.
