Interesting News
  • Modern throwback.

This is the XSR900. And yes, you’re right - it’s the charismatic three-cylinder MT-09 wearing it’s dad’s flares and floppy-collared shirt. Chassis and engine are MT-09, with the 2016 updates of a slipper-assist light-action clutch and three-level traction control. For the XSR the MT’s contemporary styling is swapped for round lights, aluminium bodywork and round instruments. ‘To reflect Yamaha’s sporty DNA, its history and its iconic motorcycles of the past,’ they say. Hmm. Don’t know about all that, but the 900 pulls it off. You could predict the XSR. After retrofying the MT-07 into the XSR700 (see last issue) this larger ‘Faster Sons’ variant was a given, especially after Yamaha’s video of the ‘Faster Wasp’ MT-09 flattracker by US custom bloke Roland Sands. Let’s hope the trim on the front of his tank makes the accessory list, to give the same flat-tank profile. In other MT-related news, there’s now an MT-03. Basically a naked YZF-R3 sportsbike for A2 licence holders, with funky digi dash, LED lights and crisp lines, it’s not quite a modern LC... but looks good.
  • Aprilia RSV4 R-FW.

For those who think good just isn’t good enough, Aprilia has released more information on a “Factory Works” program that will enable riders or teams to buy an RSV4 built by the manufacturer’s racing department. While the program is primarily intended to keep Aprilia’s RSV4 on race grids around the world, it is also a chance for (very) serious trackday enthusiasts or collectors to stake their claim on Aprilia Racing Division’s years of hard work and development…for a price, of course. No word just yet on what that price will be, though Aprilia did confirm that the RSV4 R-FW will be made available in five packages (each varying in terms of specification for engine and electronics), with the top packages featuring special electronics systems and an engine with upward of 230 hp. • VAUXHALL.

When the Astra Sports Tourer was first announced, Vauxhall boasted efficiency of 99g/km for the 1.0i Turbo ecoFLEX editions and an even lower 96g/km for the Easytronic automated manual versions. But with homologation now complete, those figures have crept up by 1g/km with the official figures declared as 100 and 97g/km, respectively. The latter version sees a change in official fuel economy figures that are quoted, too, with 67.3mpg listed, as opposed to 68.9mpg before. These changes mean that for company car users, the manual gearbox version at 100g/km increases by one benefit-in-kind band to 18 per cent, compared to 17 per cent previously, while Easytronic versions stay the same as before. The prices are unchanged, too, with the Astra Sports Tourer Design 1.0i Turbo ecoFLEX priced at Ј17,285, rising to Ј17,985 for the better equipped Tech Line version. The load-lugging Astra Sports Tourer is set to arrive in UK showrooms in February.
