Interesting News
  • G 310 R.

The much-talked-about collaboration between BMW Motorrad and our very own TVS Motors has resulted in this: the BMW G 310 R. Although there was no mention of TVS at the BMW Motorrad stall at EICMA, this is the bike that will lead the Indo-German onslaught in the suddenly burgeoning 300-cc segment. Styling of this brand-new naked motorcycle, BMW’s first sub-500-cc bike in recent years, is attractive but far from revolutionary. Ergonomics seem to be fairly relaxed but not as upright as a typical commuter. So far so conservative. What is truly revolutionary, however, is the engine placement - unlike all other manufacturers BMW have gone with a design that places the exhaust outlet facing backwards. Although the advantages of this move are unclear, it would aid ram air intake if there was one. Speaking of the engine, it’s an all-new 313-cc water-cooled single-cylinder with four valves and DOHC. Peak power is rated at 34 PS, which is available at 9,500 revs, while max torque of 28 Nm comes in at 7,500 RPM. Can’t wait to ride it!
  • LAND ROVER news.

As the Discovery reaches its twilight years, with a replacement around 18 months away, Land Rover has launched a pair of special models named Graphite and Landmark. Both versions feature the robust 252bhp 3.0-litre SDV6 powerplant that produces a hefty 443lb ft of torque. Capable of towing up to 3.5 tonnes, it isn’t the most economical vehicle on the planet, though CO2 emissions have been steadily decreasing and are now down to 203g/km, with an official combined fuel economy figure of 36.7mpg on the combined cycle. Both versions feature Xenon headlights, front and rear parking sensors, a heated front windscreen, 19-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, heated front seats and a reversing camera, as well as a 380-watt Meridian Audio system. Landmark versions have a whole host of extra equipment and is based on the flagship Discovery HSE Luxury model, and includes 20-inch alloy wheels, heated seats front and rear, adaptive headlights, Windsor leather upholstery with electric and memory front seats, electric Alpine sunroof, an 825-watt surround sound system, a leather and heated steering wheel and rear seat entertainment system. There’s also black detailing to the badges, front grille, side vents, door mirrors and roof bars. The price of the Discovery Graphite is Ј47,495, with the plusher Landmark model costing Ј55,995. Available to order right now, the first cars will arrive at Land Rover dealers in January.
  • FIAT news.

The entry-price for Fiat’s new 500X has come down with the launch of new 94bhp 1.3-litre MultiJet engined versions. Prices now start at Ј16,345 for the Pop 1.3 MultiJet, with the mid-range Pop Star version costing Ј18,095, and the flagship Lounge edition priced at Ј19,845. The new 1.3-litre engine is Ј1,000 cheaper than the 118bhp 1.6-litre version, and introduces the more basic, entry-level Pop specification to the diesel engine range for the first time. But despite the more modest power output, there’s no savings to be made on CO2 emissions, as both engines emit the same figure of 109g/km, and according to official figures, capable of 68.9mpg on the combined cycle. The new 1.3-litre engine is available to order now, with the first deliveries expected in the new year.
