Maruti

Indian automobile Maruti Udyog Ltd company is the largest in India. It is oriented on production of Suzuki-based models.

The plant was started in 1973 in New Delhi suburb. Company's label comprises two wings.

Maruti company was founded in 1984 as joint venture with Suzuki Motors (by 50% of shares) and it is among leaders of Indian Automobile industry.

Maruti 800 is the most mass model of company. It is also called as "Indian Volkswagen" and represents a licensed version of Suzuki Alto/Fronte SB of 1985. In 1997 Maruti 800 was upgraded. Salon trim remains simple and made from leather-cloth or velour. Thanks to great output "800" model twice cheaper than archaic Ambassador sedan. In addition to base version with 3-cylinder engine (0.8 l, 39 hp), production of more comfortable ЕХ and DX models was started. They were equipped with new engine of the same volume with 4 valves on each cylinder, 45hp power and 5-stage gear box.

Another representative of Suzuki Alto generation is Maruti Zen. It is offered with new 1.0 l 16-valves 4-cylinder engine of 60 hp power and distributed fuel injection. 5-door Zen hatchback is a licensed Servo of 1990-1998 and it has been produced since 1993.

Last years model range was expanded by Classic version with retro appearance and 3-door Sport model. However, since 2000 this model is shaken out by new Alto of modern "Japanese" generation with 0.8 l, 45 hp and 1.1 l, 62 hp engines.

More prestige 4-meter sedan of 1000 and 1300 Esteem model (Swift of 1988) with 1.3 l engine of 65 hp power was issued in 1994 and in 1997 it was restyled. This model was fitted with climatic system and Quadro audiosystem with removable panel. Esteem sedan series was renewed by AX version. For this car was created the same version of engine with 4 valves per cylinder and distributed injection (1.3 l, 85 hp).

Frame Gypsy offroadster (SJ410/Samurai of 1981) was made with removable soft or hard top as well as pickup with capacity of 500 kg with 45-hp 1.0 l engine. Elongated Gypsy King with 66-hp 1,3 l engine has been issued with folded top or hard plastic top with increased height as well as 5-door 7-seated version. These models are popular among police and in high-mountain area. In the future it is planned to expand this line with Grand Vitara offroadster designed by YGM studio.

Commercial 5-8-seated Omni E and Omni High Roof minivans (Carri ST 90 VZ of 1982) of integral configuration with engine from 800 model have been made since 1984 and 1999 respectively. In 1998 Omni E was restyled.

Since the end of 1999 the company issues 5-door Wagon-R minivan (of 1997 version) with 16-valve 1.1 l engine with power of 62 hp.

At the top of Maruti passenger car list locates Baleno sedan (1999) and Baleno Altura station wagon (2000) with 1.6 l engine of 94 hp power (under the license of Suzuki Cultus and Cultus Wagon).

New Versa model (analogue of Suzuki Carry) with 1.3 l engine of 823 hp power was presented in October of 2001.

The largest Indian automaker during 2000 produced 286.5 thousands of passenger cars which is less than in previous year.
