Mercury is an American company specialized in passenger car production. It was founded as Ford Motor division. Company's headquarter is located in Dearborn.

In 1939 Edsel Ford, Henry ford's son, insisted on introduction of middle class cars in Ford's working program. These cars should occupy niche between cheap Ford models and expensive Lincolns and compete with Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and the cheapest Cadillac models. New brand was named as Mercury after Romanian Deity who was trade godfather. Mercury cars of Lincoln-Mercury division of Ford concern have higher "social status" as mass-market cars of "Ford" division.

At the beginning all Mercury models were issued with cabriolet body. They were equipped with 8-cylinder engine and luxurious trim. First car was a modified Ford model with elongated body and V8 engine of large volume. The novelty was so successful that it has been issued till 1942 without substantial changes and was so popular that there was no need in any modifications.

The prototype of Mercury Sable, a luxury version of Ford Taurus, as a Ford Taurus itself was announced in 1985. These two cars were bestsellers in their category. In 1988 Mercury Sable was equipped with new 3.8-liter engine. In 1989 and autumn of 1991 car body and saloon were modified. Modern Mercury Sable generation has been issued since 1996 and differs a lot from previous one.

First demonstration of Villager was held on summer 1992. In 1998 on Chicago auto show was presented first modification of car. In 1999 car design was renewed.

First demonstration of Mercury Mystique model was held on February of 1994. It was a luxury copy of Ford Mondeo/Contour. On Detroit autoshow in 1997 was presented renewed Mercury Mystique which has became available since 1998.

Production of Mercury Tracer, the luxury copy of Ford Escort, was started in 1994 and three years later, in 1997, it was upgraded. Tracer is assembled on plants in Michigan and Mexico.

Comfortable Mountaineer terrain of 2002 model year has became a main novelty of 2001. It became available in spring of 2001. It was luxury version of Ford Explorer.
