Opel

Opel

Full name of Opel company is "Adam Opel AG". Five Opel brothers founded this company and it was named by the full name of their father - Adam Opel, an owner of sewing machine and bicycles production plant. The first Opel car was made in 1902 and it was equipped with 2-cylinder engine. Production expanded, model was kindly accepted by consumer, but plant burnt down in 1911. In record time production was reconstructed and in 1913 the company, which first applied conveyor in Europe, had already produced trucks. However inflation after the First World War caused full bankruptcy of company and brothers sold their company to General Motors. Opel aimed to win the market of small and medium cars and had become the greatest automobile company in Europe. Opel Olympia and Opel Kadett are emblematic models of these times.

In 40-ies Nazi government had almost defalcated General Motors plants - the company was nationalized. After war part of equipment was exported in Russia for future Automobile plant named after Leninist komsomol. But the company as phoenix bird had recovered again. Such bestsellers as Opel Rekord and Opel Kapitan were designed.

Modern Opel is famous by its Astra, Vectra and Omega models. Designer's decisions in company are very interesting. If BWM has too "sleeked" lines and Mercedes, in contrast, "undergrinds" them but Opel brings some singing invisible trait that is called as art.

Nowadays the company controls a quarter of car production in Germany and takes the second place after Volkswagen. The most popular models are Omega, Vectra and Kadett.
