The hugest Malaysian automaker (Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Bhd) is specialized in production of cars under Mitsubishi license.

Cars production in Malaysia begun in 1983 after signing of government agreement between В«Heavy Industry of MalaysiaВ» Malaysian automobile company and Japanese concern named В«Mitsubishi Motor CorporationВ».

First Proton Saga cars rolled off production line in 1985. This model with sedan and hatchback bodies represented a Lancer model of 1983 with modified appearance and reinforced suspension and it was suitable for local conditions.

Export in left-driving countries was organized in 1985.

In 1991 joint company was transformed into В«Public Limited CompanyВ» (PLC) free of В«Mitsubishi Motor CorpВ» influence. In 1995 the company was included in В«DRB-HICOMВ» group.

In January 1996 middle class Proton Perdana sedan was firstly demonstrated. It was designed on Mitsubishi Eterna basis. In October Proton company had bought 80% of shares of British Lotus company.

A dynamic Malaysian Proton company in 2004 has produced over 270,000 passenger cars. The first Proton plant works at full capacity to satisfy constantly arising demand. Every year in Malaysia sold about 300,000 cars and 60% of them are Proton cars.

Now company produces such models as Perdana, Persona, Saga and Waja.
