This is a subsidiary of General Motors. At the beginning of 80-ies it was obvious that technologically American automobile industry considerably falls behind Japanese one. Moreover, American cars were inferior not only in quality but in prime cost too.
Just then GM management has decided to create an expensive "Saturn Project" which is said have cost the company 3.5 mlns dollars and several years of hard work.
The project has implemented construction of special automobile plant basing on absolutely new production engineering. This enterprise that operates autonomously and independently of other GM divisions was intended to produce some models of compact passenger cars (by American standards) that were not inferior to Japanese ones in price or quality.
It was first time when American automobile industry has implemented Japanese principles of production, beginning of continuous supply of parts "just in time" and ending by collective participation of workers in management and planning.
Now Saturn produces following models for US market: ION Quad Coupe, ION Sedan, VUE and Relay.
