SEAT company ( Sociedad Espanola de Automobiles de Turismo S. A.) was founded in 1950. Its founders were National Institute of Production (51%), some banks (42 %) and FIAT (7%).

SEAT develops rapidly - the first SEAT car rolled off the assembly line in 1953 and only 12 years later SEAT has produced over 100 thousands cars per year. Two millionth SEAT was produced in 1974 and the company became eighth among European automakers. In 1980 FIAT refuses to participate actively in the SEAT and two years later the company signed an agreement on industrial and commercial cooperation with Volkswagen. Seat has produced its 5-millionth car in 1983. SEAT plants have released Volkswagen Passat. In 1986 Volkswagen owed 51% of shares and by December its fraction increased up to 75%. In 1989 was launched building of new plant in Martorell and three years later it was set up by King of Spain Juan Carlos. Volkswagen has bought 99.99% SEAT shares in 1990. Since that moment all Seat models were gradually upgraded and were issued on the same platform as Volkswagen cars.

According to plans of German concern the SEAT brand should have more evident sportive character and for it was created a lots of concept cars one of which was SEAT Salsa coupe.
